About C-PODs
The C-POD has been superceded by the F-POD, but many are still in use and we continue to provide support for both the hardware and software.
Which POD should you use?
For new users and for new projects there is now no alternative to the F-POD as key electronic components of the C-POD are no long available (and the F-POD is better!)
Without this text, title below capitalises
What are the key differences between the C-POD and F-POD?
- The F-POD collects a much richer set of data on each click and this enables the KERNO-F classifier to achieve greater sensitivity while at the same time reducing the very low false positive rate
- The F-POD click selection algorithm + KERNO-F classifier gives remarkably good extraction of the click rates in the click bursts that are used in social communication by both dolphins and porpoises.
- The F-POD writes normal files to the any micro-SD card so no special formatting of cards is needed
- Starting the F-POD is much simpler – just insert the SD card!
- F-POD files have times taken from its real-time clock
- The C-POD runs for slightly longer than the F-POD. The F-POD has a ‘deep sleep’ mode so logging alternate minutes nearly doubles the running time, and the Lithium Rechargeable F-POD runs continuously for >7months sampling at 1m samples/s
How can I change from using C-PODs to F-PODs?
- Make paired deployments of C-PODs and F-PODs in a range of sites, covering the range of noise regimes and cetacean presence that you have been encountering.
- Get a ‘scaling factor’ for the difference between the level of your operational statistic for each deployment:
- Do enough replicates of these pairs to see that you have a sufficiently precise estimation of the scaling factor to meet the aim of your project.
- Use a modelling approach to determining the ‘scaling factor’ – advice on this can be dowloaded below
- Share your findings with Chelonia and the POD community.
