How to send POD data:

1. Don’t send the .CHE files from the SD card, unless specifically requested. Send the FP1 or CP1 files. Then we can look at files that have exactly the same name, and the risk of confusing identically named .CHE files is removed.

2. Send the files using this link to our Wetransfer account: https://chelonia.wetransfer.com/ There is no size limit and the transfer is fast and we get a record of all the pending incoming files.

3. Include the name of the file(s) in all emails that relate to them.

4. Sometimes we need the REPORT.txt file That is a small file on the SD card

Join the Chelonia POD User Group

Joining the Chelonia User Group means that you will receive perhaps 2 or 3 emails a year from us about important news and changes.
We do not hold any personal information on members of that group, and do not share the list with anyone.
Your name and email will not be shared. You will be able to unsubscribe at any time.

    Meet the team:

Chelonia was formally established in 2006 and has since grown in both size and reputation. Our mission statement is ‘To sustainably make the world’s most fit-for-purpose echo-location monitoring instruments and to support indigenous conservation using them’. The team greatly enjoy their engagement with conservation users.

    Director

    Nick Tregenza
    nick.tregenza@chelonia.co.uk
Nick started by running observer programs on local fisheries while working as a medical doctor. The unexpectedly high bycatch rates of porpoises stimulated him to develop an acoustic instrument to help understand the movement of porpioses around fishing gear. When that proved useful he developed successively more powerful methods of identifying cetacean click trains.
It's now reached a point where he has no plans to retire, at least while he can think!

    Chief Technical Officer

    Matthew Dodkins
    matthew.dodkins@chelonia.co.uk
Matthew has recently joined Chelonia as CTO having worked with Chelonia for many years. He brings deep experience of micro-processors and embedded code.

Now he is tackling streaming data to the cloud, developing a WAVE file recorder and more ....

    Production Manager and Engineer

    Dan Murphy
    dan.murphy@chelonia.co.uk
Dan's background is in physics and software engineering. His roles include development of new products, testing and calibrating the marine recorders and ensuring production quality.
He also provides product support and trains users to analyse F-POD data.

    Sales, Purchasing and Logistics

    Sibylle Ulmenstein
    sibylle.ulmenstein@chelonia.co.uk

Sibylle connects the team to our customers through a maze of regulations.

Contact Sibylle with any questions about sales, servicing, import/exports, and training workshops.

    Research Scientist

    Callum Duffield
    callum.duffield@chelonia.co.uk

Callum completed a PhD in behavioural ecology in 2023 and now researches ways of discriminating cetacean species for Chelonia and implementing population trend assessment using the Paired Year Ratio Assessment method.

    Research Development Officer

    Joe Dennett
    joe.dennett@chelonia.co.uk

Joe's primary focus with Chelonia is the development of the CATT – Cetacean Acoustic Trend Tracking – project. CATT aims to learn lessons on how to implement a low cost and precise means of determining trends using an array of F-PODs around the island of Britain. Many of the stations combine PODs with other instruments deployed as part of other projects.

    Hydrophone construction

    Paul Semmens

Paul, a field biologist of remarkable breadth and skill, refines and carries out the exacting process of building our hydrophone / pre-amplifier units, which have an enviable reputation for maintaining precise performance in very challenging conditions.

    Engineering contractors

Chelonia is hugely grateful to the skilled and creative engineers who contribute electronic and hardware skills to the develoment and construction of our instruments.

    Company Secretary

    Tom Tregenza
    tom.tregenza@chelonia.co.uk
Tom is a zoology professor at Exeter University where he teaches, supervises and pursues research on evolutionary mechanisms operating in wild populations.

As Company Secretary he has been able to develop mutually productive links with academics including setting up a successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership in Mathematics.

    F-POD users

We hugely value our pioneering collaborators across the world. Just to mention a few:
Armando Jaramillo-Legorreta and team in Mexico working on the Vaquita; The BlackCeTrends team in the Black Sea; The Baltic Sea people building on the legacy of SAMBAH; WWF teams working on river dolphins; Michael Mwangombe and colleagues in Kenya; Ada Natoli in UAE; Xhitao Wang in China; Caroline Weir in the Falkland Islands; NOAA in the USA; Inuit projects on belugas in Nunavik; ... and many others. Thank you all!

PhD student in Cetacean Social Communication

    Jess Jones
    jj519@exeter.ac.uk

Chelonia part-funds and supports Jess' PhD on how odontocetes use click-based social communication. Jess says she wanted a PhD that did not have a clearly prescribed path and used maths. We are all rooting for her!
